Optimization Problems Calculus Worksheet and Lesson
Optimization word problems are a cornerstone of the high school calculus curriculum. These challenging problems are where math meets the real world!
Optimization problems challenge 12th grade calculus students to design cost-effective containers, maximize land use, and find ideal dimensions for everything from boxes to fences.
Now when I say these problems are challenging, I mean it.
Throughout my teaching career I have helped hundreds of students master the process for solving optimization problems in calculus.
Most would agree – these problems are hard!
But if you follow the process I explain here and practice, you will be mastering these problems in no time!
That’s why I put together this optimization problems calculus worksheet full of dynamic problems that will help you practice applying your calculus knowledge in meaningful ways.
This is a great resource for test prep and daily practice, or if you are just curious about real-world applications of derivatives.
The included answer key also contains full detailed solutions for you to check your work!
The Optimization Process
Before you attempt the optimization problems calculus worksheet, let’s start with an overview of the main idea behind these problems.
In an optimization problem, you’re typically asked to find the maximum value or minimum value of a quantity under certain constraints.
To do this, you’ll go through the following steps:
- Begin by defining the variables. What are you solving for?
- Next, write the constraints. These are the relationships that limit your variables.
- We then build the objective function. This is what you want to optimize. Depending on the problem it could be area, cost, time, or something else.
- Find the derivative of the objective function and identify its critical points.
- In some cases, your teacher may ask you to use the first derivative test or evaluate absolute extrema to determine where the function reaches its maximum or minimum (I’ve skipped this step on the activity sheet below).
If you can keep this process in mind as you attempt the problems on the optimization problems calculus worksheet below, you will find the process to be much more intuitive after practice!

Optimization Problems Calculus Worksheet
I have put together this calculus optimization problems worksheet to provide you with an opportunity to practice applying the process above to real-world problem scenarios.
I designed this worksheet with structured challenges that will gradually build your confidence and skills with these difficult problems.
Specifically, I’ve included:
- A one-sided fence problem
- An open box optimization problem (minimizing the surface area)
- A cylinder cost minimization problem
- A classic “two numbers” problem
